Shut off the main valve
In most Central Florida homes it’s outside where the water line comes up, often near a front hose bib, or in the garage by the water heater. Turn it clockwise until it stops.

Turn off the water heater
If the tank is leaking, switch off its breaker (electric) or turn the gas knob to “off”, then close the cold-water valve on top. Don’t drain it: the water can scald.

Photograph everything
Before you mop, take photos of the leak and the damage from a few angles. Your insurer will ask for them.
